This workshop will introduce you to the exciting tradition of woodcut printmaking! Your teacher Darren Johnson will guide you through the techniques and skills you need to get started as a woodcut printmaker. You'll learn how to use gouge tools for carving images into different types of wood, before rolling ink over your own creation and using the traditional hand burnishing method to transfer your image onto paper.
Each pupil will receive:
• 1 x Japanese Plywood board 11x16cm
• 3 x Sheets of Pop'Set paper
• 1 x Choice of gouge tool
All of which you can take home with you. During the workshop you'll also be able to try out a variety of tools and you'll get the chance to test out your new skills on different types of wood
When: Wednesday 26th June 2019, 10.30am to 12.30pm
Where: Walcot Chapel - just round the corner from our shop at 134 Walcot Street.
Is there an age limit for the workshop?
Anyone can attend our workshops, though unfortunately we do not allow children under 12. Those under 16 we do request are accompanied by an adult. Please do get in touch if you'd like to discuss.
What should I bring?
You don't need anything - we'll provide everything you need for using at the workshop, and you'll get to keep your woodcut and one gouge tool of your choice for further printing at home. Though we don't anticipate any spillages, we would recommend you wear black, or dark colours.
What are my transport/parking options getting to you?
There is parking in Bath in several locations - the nearest to us would be the Podium car park or the Cattlemarket car park. Train services to Bath Spa are very regular and the walk to Walcot Chapel takes around 25 minutes.
Please ensure you can attend the workshop before booking, as tickets for the On Paper Festival are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you are ill, shipwrecked, or unable to attend for any other reason, I’m afraid we are unable to swap your date, though you are more than welcome to find a friend that can take your place.
In the rare circumstance we are unable to run a workshop your ticket will be valid to book onto another workshop.
