Join Tobias Newbigin for a three hour workshop dedicated to the Art of brush written Roman capitals. In this hands-on class, you will explore the fundamental techniques and principles behind this timeless letterform. Experimenting with flat brushes, sign writing brushes, chalk and pencils on paper and blackboards we will gather tactile knowledge of these beautiful shapes.

Whether you're interested in lettering, a beginner looking to develop your skills or a designer seeking to refine your technique this workshop is the perfect opportunity to learn and practice the essential strokes, and nuances of brush written roman capitals.

The workshop is fun and informal, although we will look at different methods geometric construction, layout and spacing, the aim is to gather practical experience and a sound foundation to continue your practice or further your understanding.

Throughout the session, you will receive instruction and feedback as you are guided through each step of the process, whether that be how to manipulate the tool, preparing the paint, care of tools or correcting your posture. Tobias will demonstrate different techniques, set brush exercises and inspire you with the finest local and classical examples, from the Trajan column to the carvings in Bath as well as other notable lettering artists.

No prior experience is necessary - just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

All necessary materials will be provided, although do bring your own if you wish

Is there an age limit for the workshop?
Anyone can attend our workshops, though unfortunately we do not allow children under 12. Those under 16 we do request are accompanied by an adult. Please do get in touch if you'd like to discuss.

What should I bring?
You don't need anything - we'll provide everything you need for this workshop.

What are my transport/parking options getting to you?
There is parking in Bath in several locations - the nearest to us would be the Podium car park or the Cattlemarket car park. Train services to Bath Spa are very regular and the walk to Walcot Chapel takes around 25 minutes.

Cancellation Terms
Please ensure you can attend the workshop before booking, as tickets for the On Paper Festival are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you are ill, shipwrecked, or unable to attend for any other reason, we are unable to swap your date, though you are more than welcome to find a friend that can take your place.

In the rare circumstance we are unable to run the workshop, your ticket will be swapped for store credit.
